What to Write About… April 27, 2010
Hello All,
So much has gone on since I lasted posted. As you can see I’ve slipped on my goals and affirmations for the new year. But I’m not going to beat myself up. The trouble I am running into is something to actually write about. I think to myself about posting something personal, related to my career (marketing, pr, ad sales) or what.
I realize I don’t want to get too personal because, well that’s just a whole other blog. And I am not sure I want people to know that side of me. Though if you want to know a little bit about me check out my post for the lovely Ladies Lotto blog and search under Lenox Davis. When I think about posts for my field I wonder if I’m going to write anything different from anyone else. Also, since I have less than 5 years experience I’m still in the learning arena. How insightful can I be? I often get discouraged by other blogs I read because they are so much more knowledgeable. So the questions remain: what do I have to offer? What can I teach others? These questions makes me take a look back at my experiences.
Therefore, I’ve come up with a few ideas for my blog. I’m going to write about my experiences, articles I read, new things I’ve learned. I also have this idea about interviewing people who are established in their careers alongside those who are starting out. Stayed tuned for that one, should be very interesting. Interesting enough I came across this blog post on twitter. Right on time, “5 secrets to writing a blog post in 15 minutes.”
As always tell me what you think and what’s on your mind.

How The Joker Can Teach Marketers (or Anyone) a Thing or Two? January 11, 2010
Often marketers and/or the companies they work for do not like to take a chance, risk, challenge or anything not in the plan. This brings me to Heath Ledger’s The Joker in The Dark Knight. I am a huge fan of movies and I will watch a movie over and over (and over) again. One night while watching The Dark Knight, I really honed in on the hospital scene between The Joker and Harvey Dent (Two Face). Check out the scene on YouTube. Here is the Joker’s monologue:
Hi, you know I don’t want it to be any hard feelings between us, Harvey. [edit]
Dent: You’re men, your plan.
Joker: Do I really look like a man with a plan. You know what I am? I’m a dog chasing cars. I wouldn’t know what to do if I caught one. The mob has plans. The cops have plans. Gordon’s got plans. No they’re schemers. Schemers trying to control their little world. I’m not a schemer. I try to show the schemers how pathetic their attempts to control things really are. So when I say that you and your girlfriend was nothing personal, you know that I am telling the truth. The schemers that put you where you are. You were a schemer. You had plans and uh look where that got ya.
I just did what I do best. I just took your little plan and I turned it on itself. Look what I did to this city with a few drums of gas and a couple of bullets. You know what I noticed? Nobody panics when things to according to plan. Even if that plan is horrifying. If tomorrow I tell the press that like a gangbanger will get shot or a truckload of solders will be blown up, nobody panics. Because its all part of the plan. But when I say that one little old mayor will die, well then everyone loses their minds.
Introduce a little anarchy. Upset the established order and everything becomes chaos. I’m an engine of chaos. Oh and you know the thing about chaos? Its fear.
As a marketer, I realized the Joker is absolutely right. Why do companies not take chances? Why are they scared of anything not in the plan? “Blogging was not in the plan.” “Oh no, Facebook was not in the plan.” You get the picture. Well in 2010 and beyond I will become “an engine of chaos.” Fear will not control me.
How about taking your company’s plan and “turn[ing] it on itself,” and see what happens. Do not be a schemer…become The Joker. That is my plan.
Procrastination is Thy Enemy January 6, 2010
Welcome!
For weeks leading up to the New Year, I had trouble sleeping. I could not shut my brain off at night. It drove me insane (actually, I am writing this post at 1:40 in the morning). I was having a hard time putting all my goals and affirmations on paper (I even posted that on my Facebook page). Finally, I grabbed my laptop and began writing a long list of what I want and need to accomplish. One goal on my list was to start a blog. No surprise, I still could not sleep. Next, I began doing some online research with one of my goals. Still, no sleep. Watched an episode of “CSI: NY Weekends.” Nothing. Then minutes into my boyfriend’s complaints about Horatio Caine’s sarcasm on CSI: Miami it hit me. Why not just write a blog about the goals, affirmations and to-do’s I want to achieve. By doing so, I really push myself to accomplish each one. Hey, public scrutiny works.
Coming up with a list of goals, to-dos and affirmations are not as easy as one would think, especially for an entire blog. You have to be realistic and honest with yourself. It may consist of saying to yourself, “I can’t afford to go ______” (insert any place Bolt Bus does NOT go). Here is a tentative list of goals and affirmations I want to achieve in 2010. Note there are a few I must leave out for discretionary reasons.
In no particular order:
- Start a blog—check
- Learn more about Search Engine Optimization
- Go to Bed before 11 o’clock
- Eat breakfast every morning
- Read 2 business magazines a week
- Read a newspaper a day (sorry NYTimes, don’t have the time)
- Wash clothes twice a month (once every 6 weeks has been the norm).
- Organize and Schedule…everything (this should totally be first and bold!)
- Get my learner’s permit
- Clean my place at least twice a week (how do I accumulate so much ish?)
- Actually remember this list
What are some of your goals and how do you plan to achieve them?
Take the journey with me and feel free to leave a comment. Be nice. I have a lot on to do.
